Body Composition Lab

Q Lab: Body Composition Please attach your scale print out to this lab report! (taking a photo and uploading or pasting into assignment is sufficient) Objective: • To evaluate body composition, particularly body fat %, using three methods; BIA Scales, handheld machine, and skin calipers. To Compare methods of estimating EEN/RMR Procedure: To be explained in class Body Composition: The percentage of lean body mass vs fat mass, listed as %. 1. Body Fat analysis Hand-Held: Measure your percentage of body fat using the hand-held appliance: Body Fat % ________% Fat Free Mass (%) 100 – BF% = ________% How many pounds of fat is on your body? Weight x Body Fat % (in decimal format) = Total Fat Mass Show equation: Total Fat Mass ________ lbs 2. Tanita® Body Scale (floor model): Measures the total body Measure your percentage of body fat using the hand-held appliance: Body Fat % ________% Fat-Free Mass (%FFM) 100 – BF% = ________% How many pounds of fat is on your body? Weight x Body Fat % (in decimal format) = Total Fat Mass Total Fat Mass ________ lbs 3. Tanita® Body Scale (new model): Measures the total body Measure your percentage of body fat using the hand-held appliance: Body Fat % ________% Fat-Free Mass (%FFM) 100 – BF% = ________% How many pounds of fat is on your body? Weight x Body Fat % (in decimal format) = Total Fat Mass Total Fat Mass ________ lbs 4. Skin Calipers i. Triceps mm_____ ii. Bicems mm_____ iii. Subscapular mm_______ Total mm__________ (refer to chart put % above) BODY FAT % ACCORDING TO CHART______ Body Fat Classifications* Classification Women (%fat) Men (%fat) Essential Fat 10-12% 2-4% Athletes 14-20% 6-13% Fitness 21-24% 14-17% Acceptable 25-31% 18-25% Obese 32% plus 25% plus *American Council on Exercise Questions: 2. LIST YOUR DIFFERENT BODY FAT % RESULTS HERE: a. Handheld _________% b. Tanita Scale (floor) _________% c. New Tanita Scale _________% d. Skin Calipers _________% Explain how these BIA machines (not the calipers) measure body fat % and what major physiological factor would cause the results to be skewed/why? 3. Compare your Body Mass Index with your BODY COMPOSITION results The BIA scale (Tanita) estimated your body composition by using your measured muscle mass (remember muscles use more calories than fat!) plus the other factors (gender, age, weight, height). Body Mass Index uses a formula to assess weight status and roughly estimate body fatness. First calculate your BMI/SHOW MATH HERE: Now fill in the chart: ASSESSMENT METHOD RESULT My HEALTHY RANGE MY Body Mass Index (BMI) Body Fat % New Tanita % Answer the following: Are you in the health range for BMI? YES NO Are you in the healthy range for BF% YES NO Could your BMI be out of healthy range (too high or low), but your body fat % be in a healthy range? Why or why not? Can your body fat % be out of healthy range (too high or low), but your BMI is in the healthy range? Why or why not? 4. In the Metabolism lab, you estimated your total calorie needs (EER/EEN/DEE) using the Mifflin St Jeor equation. Today, the Tanita software/scale estimated your DEE by using your measured muscle mass (remember muscles use more calories than fat!) plus the other factors (Physical Activity, gender, age, weight, height) Compare the numbers (staple the print out from the scale to this lab) DEE from BIA software DEE (EER) from MSJ equation (use number from Met. Lab) Which of the two do you feel is most accurate and why? Please give a complete and justified answer.
